In light of the growing conflict between Naomi and Hero, she decided to put a foot forward and try to resolve things before they were beyond saving. Below is a letter that she slid under the door of Hero's shop during the early pre-dawn hours a day or so after she returned to Sharn.
- Dear Hero,
- My trip back to Sharn was uneventful as I hope yours was. The weather and the jungle were both pleasant, and I was glad that the dark skinned elves allowed us to pass in silence. On the boat, and without my usual companionship, I had time to consider a lot of things.
- I suspect that there is much I do not know about you. Since you admitted to following me and reporting to Aramil it stands to reason that you know far more about me. Know, however, that I do not hold this against you. I do not wish to pry into your life, but I am anxious to know whatever you will share with me. I hope that part of that knowledge is insight about why you seem to hold me in contempt. I am not aware of anything that I have done or have allowed to happen through my own inaction to harm you. If I have harmed you in some way, you must understand that I am unaware of it.
- For my part, I would like to trust you and to mayhap know you as a true friend one day. Yes, I would like to but it is your actions and not your words that will earn that trust, and those actions have been conspicuously absent. Therein lays the problem. Every bit of the little I know about you warns me to stay away. When I try to understand your motivations, to wait and see the “why” behind your actions, I am rewarded by witnessing a greater depth of apparent self interest. I have spent countless hours sorting through every interaction that we have had and still I am unable to find your redeeming qualities. I dread that what I see in you is all there is but, at the same time, I refuse to believe it.
- Where does this leave us? The fact that Fate has somehow entwined us, at least in my heart and mind, is impossible to ignore. Will we be friends, enemies, or nothing at all?
- I am writing this as a plea that you work with me to reach an understanding between us. It is abundantly clear to me that your life is very different than mine and that we clash at some fundamental level. In spite of this, Fate has brought us together time and again to overcome challenges that neither of us could do alone. Fate does not make mistakes and we are bound together until such time as she is done with our pairing, so I hope that we could make it more pleasant rather than progressively less so.
- I do not expect anything, but I do hope.
- Sincerely,
- Naomi
